Evidence before conclusions.
IFRS reporting, consolidations, audit evidence, internal controls, goodwill impairment, corporate tax audit work and IFRS 17 implementation assurance.
I’m Spencer. I bring a Big Four accounting foundation, hands-on accounting software experience, and a habit of turning repetitive work into useful systems.
My career has moved from testing financial information to building the systems that prepare, review and explain it.
At PwC, I worked in financial-services assurance across insurance, healthcare, software and services. At Draftworx, I translate accounting standards and audit methodology into financial-statement templates, working papers and software workflows. Alongside that work, I build and test AI tools that make professional knowledge easier to use.
IFRS reporting, consolidations, audit evidence, internal controls, goodwill impairment, corporate tax audit work and IFRS 17 implementation assurance.
Turn ambiguous requirements into usable tools. Work across accountants, developers, testers and customers. Document what works so the next person can build on it.
BCom in Accounting Sciences (2017–2019), followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting Sciences (2020). The formal foundation for a career in financial reporting, assurance, financial management and taxation.
Completed a three-year training contract in financial-services assurance, with work across insurance and other listed groups. Built practical depth in IFRS financial statements, group scoping, consolidations, controls, substantive testing and corporate tax calculations.
During the Afrocentric engagement, led planning and coordinated client process owners, component auditors, delivery centres and specialists. Directed goodwill impairment testing across 15 cash-generating units, evaluating forecast cash flows and working with valuation specialists and business executives.
Automated data consolidation and group-scoping work. Built Power BI dashboards for audit analytics and a staff-availability and resource-planning dashboard for PwC HR partners across the Africa practice.
Extended my time at PwC to contribute to Liberty’s IFRS 17 implementation audit. Co-led the work with another senior associate, collaborating with actuarial teams and IFRS 17 specialists to connect valuation outputs, accounting requirements and audit evidence.
Qualified as a CA(SA) in 2024.After PwC, took a career break and pursued focused learning in crypto accounting and blockchain through the Crypto Accounting Academy. Continued developing practical skills in Python, APIs, data analysis and automation.
Template Developer & AI Strategy Lead
Develop audit working papers and financial-reporting templates, translate technical requirements into reliable logic, and build AI and automation tools around the work. My scope spans South African public-sector audit workflows, UK and related international reporting frameworks, and Canadian ASPE template development.
A closer look at the workAccounting knowledge matters most when it survives contact with real data, real users and a release deadline.
Develop and maintain working papers for the Auditor-General South Africa environment, including PFMA and MFMA workflows. Translate audit methodology into spreadsheet logic, named ranges, validations and documentation, with testing and release support.
Build and refine financial-statement templates for FRS 102, Section 1A and FRS 105, including company and LLP reporting and related jurisdiction variants. Extend that framework knowledge through Canadian ASPE template work.
Investigate formulas, workbook structure, cross-references and print outputs; work with developers and testers to resolve issues. Turn customer feedback and technical research into clearer requirements, test cases and practical guides.
Started the internal “Words of Wisdom” documentation initiative to help new employees get up to speed and existing teammates refresh their knowledge. Authored an AI strategy proposal covering operations, product opportunities, knowledge capture and responsible adoption.
I use AI to research, build, test and document. The real work is giving it the right context, useful tools and a reliable way to check the result.
I experiment across Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, ChatGPT and Gemini. I use coding agents as part of a development process: scope the task, prepare the evidence, implement, inspect the changes, test and capture the lesson. Model output becomes useful when it can be traced to sources and checked against the accounting requirement.
Built an MCP integration exposing selected Draftworx Cloud functions, including client, trial-balance and practice summaries, to AI assistants. Designed structured tool interfaces and environment-based access controls.
The accounting value: an assistant can work with relevant ledger context through a defined interface, instead of relying on copied fragments and guesswork.
Built a support-retrieval tool that extracts Slack history through the API, structures conversations for search and uses OCR to recover error text from screenshots. Results point back to the original discussion and solution.
The accounting value: preserve the experience of support specialists and make confirmed solutions easier for the next person to find.
Developed AI-assisted translation automation for financial-statement text, including English-to-Afrikaans workflows. The pipeline preserves named ranges and formula structure, with backups, resumable processing and logs.
The accounting value: automate a language task while keeping the controls that make a financial-reporting template work across different entities.
Developed a structured approach to AI-assisted review of financial-statement PDFs: grammar, singular and plural wording, entity context, placeholders and print layout. Distinguish master-template checks from checks on completed client financials.
The accounting value: a focused first pass can surface repetitive issues for a reviewer. A checklist and relevant entity context make the output easier to assess; professional sign-off stays with a person.
My recent experiments include programmatic coordination of coding-agent sessions, bounded work assignments, durable task state and recoverable handovers. A local coordination helper has passed live launch and dispatch checks; broader end-to-end acceptance is still in progress.
I’m also designing a template-edit workflow that separates file preparation, implementation, review and deployment, with explicit inputs, outputs, change evidence and human checkpoints. This is active experimental work, rather than a claim of fully autonomous production delivery.
“If I solve a problem twice, I want the third person to inherit a tool, a check or a clear explanation.”
That is how I aim to get more from AI: use it to remove repeat work, keep deterministic checks around sensitive changes, and turn each useful result into something the team can reuse.
A web app for shared bills, partial payments and settling what each person owes. A practical exercise in turning a messy reconciliation into a clearer experience.
